How to Know If It Is Time To Replace Windows

replace windowsAs the Summer winds down, many homeowners turn their attention to matters of home improvement, and preparation for changes in the weather.  Oftentimes, it is these weather changes that remind homeowners that they can no longer put off these projects and improvements and their home’s energy efficiency.  For example, while forgotten in the Summer months, it may now be time to replace windows!

There are several factors that may indicate the need for this often procrastinated home improvement.

  • Energy Bills- Are your energy bills still high despite efforts to conserve in other areas around the home?
  • Drafts in the Winter- Do you avoid certain rooms in the Winter because you just can’t keep them warm and comfortable?  Consider these drafts money flying right out of those windows!
  • Window Operation- Are certain windows unusable due to rusted hardware (moisture!) or layers of old paint that have sealed your windows shut?  This is not only inefficient, but dangerous!
  • Water Infiltration- If there are noticeable signs of leaking, such as stains on the window sills, mold or mildew, and softness in the frames, this is a sure sign that it is time to consider replacement of the window.  These signs can be unhealthy, not to mention unsightly.
  • Seal Failure- Have you noticed moisture and condensation between the panes of glass on your windows?  This is a sure sign of seal failure, and that your windows have lost their energy efficiency.

If you identify with any of these scenarios, it is time to stop procrastinating, and begin the steps necessary to making this wise investment in your home.  The benefits to your pocketbook, and to your comfort, will be felt for many years to come.
